National Sleep Awareness Week

National Sleep Awareness week should bring to all of our attention the importance and effectiveness that restfull sleep can bring to our lives. Whether it is a 30 minute power nap or a good night’s rest, you are deserving of peace, recooperation, and restoration. This week, we focus on recognizing that modifying our regular sleep habits into a more valuble slumber is the best route to holisitic health.


To begin with, sleep is essential to beginning and ending your day properly. According to the National Sleep Foundation, “adults between the ages of 18 and 65 years old should be getting anywhere from seven to nine hours of sleep per night.” Setting bedtimes can assist in creating healthy sleep hygene. Effective sleep increases alertness and energy, decreases anxiety and depression, and promotes overall balance to your life. Making efforts to improving your sleep habits can conquer a great deal of issues that people typically experience within regular day to day tasks.


Without rest, an erray of issues can accumlate from poor sleeping habits. According to according to the CDC as quoted in the National Wellness Institute (2018), “insufficient sleep has been linked to the development and management of a number of chronic diseases and conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression”. These alarming contributing factors that are results of lack of restful sleep, is the primary reason why the awareness of practicing effective sleep habits is crucial.


What can we do to help? It begins with mental health, but not just end there. Holistic health by definition is providing for your physical, mental, spiritual, and social needs. When any or all of the following is affected, your equilibrium of your lifestyle is at unrest. Focusing on self-care through healthy coping mechanisms increases your whole well-being heightening your sleep wellness. Such practices include: physical fitness, meditation/praying, social contact with others, frequent breaks from social media/news, and regular activities and hobbies. Begin these practices regulary to enhance you sleep quality.
